MY STARS:
So this was a new one for me. I had never seen this movie before. My best friend Jessica, and her boyfriend Tommy were over at my house and we were flipping through Netflix, and I mentioned I had never seen it. They glared up at me, like I was insane (mouths wide open, eyes popping out). So I said okay then, let's do it.
At first I was not anxious to watch. Being such a big fan of Merlin, I wasn't looking forward to watching a movie that sings "We Will Rock You" at a jousting tournament. It was, however, hilarious.
Heath Ledger is adorable in this movie. It was made seven years before his passing (Heath Ledger passed away in 2008). It was weird to see him so young. I think it was definitely the youngest I have ever seen him. I saw a picture of his daughter with Michele Williams today, and OMG she looks just like him in this movie. It's cute.
So anyway, they open the movie with some poor peasants surrounding a knight who apparently just died from a joust. They depended on him for a living, I guess. And I guess he wasnt very good, as they complained about not having food in three days. Heath's character takes his place and very luckily wins. He decides that instead of parting ways with his friends, they should all put there money together and compete in more tournaments. Problem is, you must be noble to compete. So...they lie. They practice for awhile, which is very funny.
Heath cuts his hair, but I think it's funny that his messy hair can still be construed as noble. But anyway, they head down the road and meet up with Geoffrey Chaucer. Now what's hilarious to me, is that my friends, Jessica and Tommy didn't realize that Chaucer was a real writer. So when he's talking about writing the Book of the Duchess, they apparently thought that was fictional. It was funny that I had known that, as Jessica is the one who has actually taught an English class before. I've never read Chaucer. Not sure I could, as he wrote in middle English. I heard his Knights Tale is much different than this one. Shocker. Lol.
So Chaucer is probably one of my favorite characters in this. He's witty, clever, and original. I guess that was the point, but he was great. He ends up having a gambling problem, so he shows up on the movie wearing no clothes. William (Heath Ledger) decides to help him. They work together and Heath successfully fools others into thinking he's a knight. He starts winning tournaments. It's all happy. He randomly becomes friends with the woman blacksmith, and she follows them around.
William falls in love with a lady. Go figure. I don't really care for their drama. It's there I guess, but it just doesn't seem to be that important. However the person that is after his lady is Count Adhemar. He's a badass dude, and I think plays a jackass in everything he's in. The actor is so good at it! I just want to slap the guy. So there's a lot of focus on the tension there. Adhemar does joust him and wins. So William just wants to get even.
He jousts against Prince Edward, and that's a big deal, because most people withdrew when they found out it was Prince Edward, pissing him off. So he was actually happy that William joust him. It won him a favor. Oh and before he knew it was Prince Edward he let him forfeit, and withdrew his joust like a gentlemen. Yay William. Adhemar had a lot of negative things to say about that.
But in the end it all worked out. As suspected William's secret didn't stay secret. Adhemar found out, and William was arrested for impersonating a noble. He was being flogged, and his friends tried desperately to get them to quit, threatening them with violence. That's when AWESOME prince Edward comes up and puts a stop to it. And....he knights William. :) So he is an official knight.
He beats the joust against Adhemar, and wins the lady. We all go home happy.
Funny movie. I certainly recommend it!!!!
